G.E. Shepheard
british Children’s illustrator and postcard artist
G.E. (George Edward) Shepheard (1868-1948) was a British illustrator of children’s books and postcards. He is one of my favourite comic artists. Not much is known about his life. He was born and grew up in North Walsham, moved to London in 1901 to work there as a freelance artist, and eventually went back to North Walsham, where he died in 1948. And that’s basically it.
What is left of G.E. Shepheard today are the books he illustrated (such as Harry Golding‘s Ben Bos’un and Harold Simpson’s The Seven Stages of Golf) and the more than 300 postcards he designed, the vast majority of them for Raphael Tuck. His style is very unique, which makes it easily recognisable.
