The Golden Age of Artist-Drawn Picture Postcards
Exploring Dudley Hardy’s Iconic Postcards and theatrical posters

Dudley Hardy started out as a conventional painter who would probably be forgotten today if he had not been inspired by the posters of Jules Cheret to create a series of advertising posters for the London theatres, which have proved much more interesting and memorable than his more serious artwork. His life and work is well-documented, so I won’t say any more about it here. His postcards include 16 sets of six cards each for Davidson Brothers, one set of six for Hartmann (“Sporting Girls”), one for Faulkner, two sets of six for Raphael Tuck, and about a dozen advertising cards, which gives us a total of at least 120 postcards. Yet there might be more to be discovered.
