Kaburaki Kiyokata: Japan’s Court Painter and Postcard Illustrator
Kiyokata Kaburaki (1878-1972), or as the Japanese would say (placing the family name first): Kaburaki Kiyokata, was a Japanese painter. He achieved considerable success in his home country, being officially appointed court painter in 1944 and receiving the Order of Culture in 1954. To keep his memory alive, the house in which he lived and worked until his death at the age of 93 is now the Kaburaki Kiyokata Memorial Museum. But long before he became famous, Kiyokata Kaburaki created illustrations for popular novels and magazines, as well as many beautiful postcards. Not all of them are signed, so I cannot be entirely sure that they are all his work. I have made the attribution on the basis of style and atmosphere.
