lina von schauroth
(1874-1970)
Lina von Schauroth was a German painter and graphic artist. She was born, lived, and died in Frankfurt on the Main.
Lina von Schauroth became well-known in Germany in the 1920 for the stained glass windows and mosaics she created. They can still be admired in Frankfurt’s Old Nikolai Church and other churches in the Frankfurt area. Many others, including the Sternenhimmel (Starry Sky) that used to adorn the IG-Farben building, were destroyed during World War Two. Much of her other works were also lost then, among them many of the posters she designed for various events and occasions, some of which were also distributed as postcards.
During World War One her work took a patriotic turn. A life-long conservative and monarchist, she wholeheartedly supported Germany’s war effort and organised collections of relief supplies for soldiers at the front, so-called “Liebesgaben” (gifts of love). She also loved animals, which she often painted, especially horses, and was very involved in animal welfare activities, campaigning for animal rights well into old age.
