Marie “Rie” Cramer
Marie “Rie” Cramer was a Dutch writer, theatrical designer, ceramist, and illustrator of (mostly) children’s books. She was born in Sukabumi in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) but moved to Arnhem in the Netherlands when she was nine years old. From 1905 to 1907 she was enrolled as a student at the Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten (the Royal Academy of Art) in The Hague, publishing her first self-illustrated book in 1906, at the age of 19.
During World War Two Rie Cramer joined the Resistance and published under the pseudonym Marc Holman anti-German plays and poems. In 1954 she left the Netherlands to spend the rest of her long life on the Spanish island Mallorca.
More than 200 of her images were printed as postcards from 1916 onwards. If you want to know more about Rie Cramer, a good place to start is Ray Hahns excellent account of her life and work on the Postcard History website.
